The idea of this airport was first conceived in 1946. Right after World War II ended, the Baltimore Aviation Commission selected a piece of 3,200 acre land in the vicinity of Friendship Church, 10 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles north of Washington D.C. And a year later, the construction of this airport began. This new facility was named the Friendship International Airport and was considered one of the most advanced airports in the country back then. After a decade, the state of Maryland took control of this airport and upgraded the place with more manpower and technological advancements of that era. It was then that it was finally given its current name, the Baltimore-Washington International Airport; a name that would signify its presence as a major air transportation hub in the region.
