Super Bowl

All set to roll on February 5th, Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events of America where millions of football fans around the world gather to watch and celebrate the championship game of the National Football League(NFL). With an estimated global audience of more than a billion people, it is annually the most watched single day sporting event in the world.

Super Bowl 2017 is all set to take place at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas and this will be the third time when Houston will play hosts to this prestigious event. It will be broadcasted nationally on FOX. The National Football Conference (NFC) champion will take on the American Football Conference (AFC) Champion to determine the league champion for the 2016 season.

The most intriguing and exciting part of Super Bowl is that it only plays one game to decide the champion, unlike the other sports leagues where a series of games is played.

Getting to the Super Bowl

There is a total of 32 league teams divided into two conferences – the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC), each of which has 16 teams. Both the conferences are further divided into four divisions of four teams each. The brackets are made up of 6 teams from each of the conferences; post the end of the regular season. The qualification works are as follows –

• The 4 division champions from each of the conferences are seeded 1 through 4 based on their overall record of wins, ties, and losses.

• Two wild-card qualifiers from each of the conferences based on their overall record of wins, ties and losses are seeded 5 and 6.

• The first round of the playoffs is called as wild-card weekend or wild-card playoffs. In this round, the third-seeded division winner plays host to the sixth-seeded wild card, and the fourth seed plays hosts to the fifth seed.

• The first and second seeded from each of the conferences are given byes in the first round, which directly advances them to the second round, the divisional playoffs where they square-off against the wild-card playoffs winners.

• The first seed plays host to the worst seed from the first round and the second seed plays the other team. The two winning teams from each of the playoff games then compete at the respective AFC and NFC Conference Championship Games, and the winning seeds of both the games qualify for the esteemed Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl Trophy

Named after Vince Lombardi, the winning trophy is a stunning silver football in a tilted position sitting atop a pyramid-like stand. The trophy takes about 72 hours to make and is crafted by Tiffany & Co. This 22 inches tall trophy weighs about 7 pounds and has an estimated value of $12,000. The trophy in the front is etched with the words “Super Bowl” and “Vince Lombardi” and the Roman numerals for the current championship alongside the NFL logo. The players, coaches and the other staff member of the team are presented with a ring.
