Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival
Coachella is one of the most extravagant and most popular music festivals in the US and across the world. Held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio California, the 2016 event drew about 200,000 musical fanatics and generated gross revenue of more than $90 million which also makes it one of the most profitable musical fests all across the world.
Coachella hosts some of the most renowned names from the music industry along with emerging musical talents and reunited groups. The fest features several genres of music such as hip hop, indie, rock and electronic dance music along with various art installations and sculptures. There are a number of stages across the grounds which constantly play live music. The primary stages include: Coachella Stage, Sahara Tent, Outdoor Theatre, Gobi Tent and Mojave Tent.
The roots of Coachella date back to 1993 when the famous American rock band Pearl Jam set flames on the stage making the 25,000 attendees go berserk with their electrifying performance. However, the original venue selected for the concert was not the Empire Polo Club. The band was initially supposed to perform in Los Angeles but after failing to reach middle grounds with the ticket organizer, the Indio club came into the picture. The success of the event is what led to the establishment of the club's credibility in hosting large and grand scale events. Paul Tollett, the head of the concert promotion company Goldenvoice that organized the Pearl Jam concert said the event laid the foundation for Coachella.
In 1997, Goldenvoice was having a hard time competing with the larger companies and were not to able to match the guarantees offered by their competitors. Thus, the idea of a musical fest was contrived. While attending a music festival, Tollett started pondering over different ideas for a fest of his own. His basic purpose was to bring young and trendy artists who were yet to climb the ladder of success. After checking out various different sites, Tollett along with his co-founder Rick Van Santen came back to the Empire Polo Club during another festival. Inspired by the club's ability to host a dazzling festival, they chose it as their festival venue.
Apart from live music, Coachella also showcases several forms of visual arts, installation arts and sculptures. The presentations are very vibrant and interactive, offering a visual delight to the festival goers.
Coachella 2017
The lineup for 2017 has already been announced and is nothing less than eye-popping. The fest will witness stalwarts like Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead headlining the event, with the rest of the slate being equally enticing featuring the likes of Zipper Club, Allah-Las, Travis Scott, Nicolas Jaar, DJ Khaled amongst many others.
